There is something about Maine. It gets in your grip, sort of like golf does. Its grip is tantalizing, yet gentle as the summer days of childhood. In Maine there is place called Kennebec.

In 1907, Kennebec Camp was established as a premier adventure camp for privileged boys from around the world. The camp remained an all-boys camp until the 1980's, often drawing several generations of sons from celebrated families including those of Michael Douglas and Ivan Feitman.

The first significant change to the Kennebec legacy came with the addition of girls in the 80's, along with major upgrades to both the facilities and the level of sports professionalism. Driving this change was new owner and third generation "Kennebeccer" Joel Lavenson, whose sports management background includes directing the Las Colinas Sports Club, hosting the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and providing innovative video training to the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots.

After raising the level of its sports program to new heights in the 80's and early 90's, Lavenson had a vision of a new Kennebec, one that reflected the founding fathers' love of golf. As a result, the legend of old experienced a re-birth just in time to greet the new millennium.

In a few years the campgrounds were completely transformed. With 15,000 square feet and four tournament-quality greens, six tees to make a nine-hole course, a 300 yard driving

Although the founding fathers (above 1907) were avid golfers themselves, it took 90 years for Kennebec to evolve into the Maine Golf Academy.

range, five target greens, three practice bunkers, and ten individualized training stations - what was already one of the most spectacular and well-constructed camps in America has become the ultimate summer golf camp.

Combining excellence in golf instruction (staff includes Disney's director of golf Brian Roddy) with the glorious natural luxury of rustic camp living, the Maine Golf Academy offers a Junior Golf Camp for girls and boys ages 9 to 17. Campers receive individualized training sessions in golf skills, play 9 or 18 holes five days a week at surrounding courses, and also get the fun of a traditional adventure camp. Kennebec continues to attract a truly international group of campers and staff, making the group dynamics as engaging as the physical surroundings.

Doesn't all this make you want to be a kid at summer camp again? Well, Kennebec's Maine Golf Academy enrolls grown-ups, too! In August, they offer a special golf camp designed for the entire family. For more information: www.golfcamp.com or 888-GOLFCAMP. From Outside the USA Call 207-465-32
